Gerhard Schmezer serves as Lecturer in the Department of English-Speaking Studies at Paris 8 University (Vincennes - Saint-Denis), where he has been affiliated with EA 1577 "The German Worlds: History of Ideas and Representations" research unit since January 1, 2019. His teaching portfolio includes specialized courses such as English for Philosophers: Philosophy and Language, English for Managers, and advanced General English instruction at B2+ level for both semesters of the 2020-2021 academic year.
Dr. Schmezer's scholarly work centers on Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophical legacy, with particular emphasis on the intersection between analytical philosophy and religious belief systems. His research spans epistemology of religious belief, meta-ethics, and the complex relationship between philosophical inquiry and biographical context. He investigates how Wittgenstein's thought navigates the boundaries between religious experience and rational discourse, with special attention to biblical interpretation and its implications for contemporary philosophy of religion. His methodological approach combines textual analysis with contextual investigation of philosophical traditions.
His publication record reveals a sustained scholarly trajectory focused on Wittgenstein's evolving relationship to religious thought, tracing developments from the mystical elements of the Tractatus to later conceptions of religious language in his mature works. The publications demonstrate rigorous engagement with primary texts while connecting Wittgenstein's insights to broader philosophical debates about the nature of religious belief and expression.
