Gerhard Lang (1924-2016) was a renowned German botanist and professor at the University of Bern, leading the Systematic Geobotanical Institute. His career included roles as curator at Karlsruhe's Natural History Museum and professorships at University of Karlsruhe (1962-1975) and University of Bern (1975-1989). He specialized in vegetation science, Quaternary paleoecology, and geobotanical mapping.
Education: Studied at University of Freiburg (1946-1948) and earned his doctorate at University of Göttingen in 1952 with pollen analysis research. Conducted global fieldwork in Siberia, Australia, Argentina, and the Alps.
Research emphasized multiproxy paleoecological methods, including quantitative macrofossil analysis and subaquatic drilling. His work documented vegetation dynamics in alpine regions, lake ecosystems, and postglacial flora evolution. Major contributions include the textbook Quartäre Vegetationsgeschichte Europas (1994) and foundational studies on Lake Constance's vegetation and Black Forest ecosystems.
Advancing ecological methodologies, Lang pioneered integrated approaches combining pollen analysis with macrofossil and sediment studies. His career spanned academic leadership, museum curation, and international field research across five decades.
