Gerhard Althoff is a renowned Professor of Medieval History at the University of Münster, specializing in early medieval political and religious history. His research focuses on medieval statehood, ritual practices, conflict resolution, and the interplay between church and political power. He has held leadership roles, including directing the Institute for Early Medieval Studies and spearheading major research initiatives like the Cluster of Excellence 'Religion and Politics in Pre-Modern Cultures' (2007–2011). He has also been a visiting professor in Paris and Berkeley.
Althoff’s academic journey includes a habilitation in 1981 and professorships at universities in Freiburg, Bonn, and Gießen before settling at Münster. His extensive publications span monographs, edited volumes, and articles on topics like Ottonian kingship, medieval legal practices, and the Gregorian Reforms. He has supervised numerous doctoral students and contributed to academic organizations such as the Mediävistischer Arbeitskreis and the Konstanzer Arbeitskreis für mittelalterliche Geschichte.
His research interests emphasize symbolic communication, medieval rituals, and the role of the church in shaping political will. Notable works include Gott belohnt, Gott straft (2022) and Medieval Law and Its Practice (2020). He received the Research Award from the University of Münster in 2005.
