Dr. Gerasimos Spanakis (known as Jerry) is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences and a researcher at the Maastricht Law+Tech Lab within Maastricht University. He contributes to academic communities as a member of the Cognitive Systems research area and the Open Science Community Maastricht, while coordinating the MaastrichtNLP reading group. His work bridges interdisciplinary research between law and technology through projects like VOXReality, NSMD, HumanAds, and RegTech4AI.
His research focuses on Social Computing, including computational modeling of social media, conversational agents, and multimodal pattern discovery. He actively co-organizes the Natural Legal Language Processing (NLLP) Workshop at EMNLP 2025 and advocates for responsible AI through collaborations with European Commission initiatives.
Recent publications include work on social bias measurement in Dutch LLMs, multimodal authorship attribution for online advertisements, and robustness analysis of NMT models. He also investigates regulatory impacts on influencer marketing transparency through longitudinal Instagram data analysis.
Dr. Spanakis participates in major NLP conferences (ACL, EMNLP, COLING) and contributes to discussions about peer-review scalability, AI ethics, and open science practices in academia. He is actively involved in community-building efforts like Queer in AI and SIGGEN, emphasizing ethical frameworks for deploying language technologies.
