Professor Gerald Williams is a faculty member at the University of Essex, holding a position in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS). He joined in 2007 after roles at the University of Kent, National University of Ireland, Galway, and University College Dublin. His research focuses on combinatorial group theory, exploring group presentations, cyclic symmetry in algebraic and topological structures, and applications in number theory, linear algebra, and graph theory.
Williams holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Heriot Watt University (2000), an M.Sc. from the University of Warwick (1997), and an M.Sci. from the University of St Andrews (1996). He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has extensive teaching experience across all levels of mathematics education.
His research emphasizes cyclically presented groups, circulant matrices, and 3-manifold structures. Recent work investigates hyperbolic groups, Fibonacci-type groups, and the interplay between algebraic presentations and topological manifolds. He has contributed to understanding group relators, Whitehead graphs, and geometric group properties.
Teaching and supervision span the mathematics curriculum, with a focus on effective pedagogical practices. His work reflects a commitment to both theoretical advancements and educational excellence, supported by his Advanced HE Senior Fellowship.
