Prof. Dr. Gerald Jurasinski is Professor of Peatland Science at the Institute of Botany and Landscape Ecology, University of Greifswald, Germany, since 2023. Previously he served as Assistant Professor and Acting Head of the Chair of Landscape Ecology and Site Evaluation at the University of Rostock, and held guest professorships at the University of Vienna (2017, 2022) and a visiting scientist role at the University of Bergen.
Education:
- Dr. rer. nat. in Biogeography, University of Bayreuth (2007)
- Dipl.-Ing. in Land Management and Environmental Protection, University of Rostock (2000)
Research Interests: Prof. Jurasinski investigates how land-use and climate change alter vegetation, soils, and ecosystem metabolism. His multidisciplinary toolkit integrates vegetation ecology, plant ecology, biogeochemistry, microbiology, micrometeorology, GIS, and geostatistical modelling to understand carbon and greenhouse-gas dynamics in peatlands and forests, with a focus on rewetting and renaturation strategies.
Laboratory & Teams: He leads the Peatland Science working group at Greifswald, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of post-docs, doctoral researchers, and technicians to advance experimental and modelling studies of peatland biogeochemistry.
