Gerald Gartlehner

Professor Gerald Gartlehner serves as Full Professor and Chair of the Department for Evidence-based Medicine and Evaluation at University for Continuing Education Krems, Austria. He concurrently holds leadership roles as Associate Director of the RTI-UNC Evidence-based Practice Center (USA), Co-Director of Cochrane Austria, and teaching appointments at Universite Paris Cite and Karl Landsteiner University for Health Sciences.

His research pioneers methodological innovations in evidence synthesis, focusing on three critical areas: comparative effectiveness/safety of medications, rapid review techniques for time-sensitive health decisions, and artificial intelligence applications to accelerate evidence production. With over 20 years of experience conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, his work directly informs healthcare policy through collaborations with the World Health Organization, Austrian Ministry of Health, and US health agencies.

Professor Gartlehner actively shapes global evidence standards as Co-convenor of the Cochrane Rapid Review Methods Group and member of the Cochrane Editorial Board. His leadership provides students access to major international evidence initiatives, including hands-on experience with federally funded US research projects through the RTI-UNC EPC and Cochrane's global network. Current methodological work emphasizes machine learning solutions for evidence synthesis bottlenecks while maintaining rigorous scientific standards for healthcare decision-making.
