Gerald Costanzo is a Professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, where he has taught poetry since 1970. He founded Carnegie Mellon University Press in 1975 and continues to serve as its director. The press publishes 20 books annually in poetry, fiction, and cultural studies, including works by Pulitzer Prize-winning poets like Rita Dove.
Costanzo's research explores American consumer culture through satire and poetic forms. He employs parables, fables, and humor to critique societal commodification of emotion, earning him recognition as a 'prophet of American consumer culture.' His recent collection, Regular Haunts (2018), features experimental rhyme structures and themes dissecting contemporary life.
His honors include:
