Georges N. Cohen (1920–2018) was a renowned biochemist and research director at the Pasteur Institute and CNRS. He specialized in enzyme regulation, amino acid metabolism, and bacterial biochemical pathways. His key contributions include the discovery of beta-galactoside permease and elucidation of allosteric enzyme regulation mechanisms. Cohen held leadership roles at the Pasteur Institute’s Scientific Council and was a founding member of EMBO. He was affiliated with the Department of Biochemistry at the Pasteur Institute and served as a member of prestigious academies including the French Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Athens.
Education: Studied mathematics, chemistry, and physiology at the Sorbonne; pursued biochemistry studies during WWII. Career: Began at CNRS in 1944 as attaché de recherche, later becoming directeur de recherche. He worked at the Pasteur Institute’s Garches annex and later led enzymology research in Gif-sur-Yvette. Major research themes included metabolic regulation, protein synthesis, and the interplay between enzyme activity and genetic control.
- Key Discoveries: Permease transport mechanisms, structural analog incorporation in proteins, dual regulatory mechanisms (genetic repression and allosteric inhibition).
- Awards: EMBO founder status, French Academy membership, international academic honors.
