Dr. George Wilson is an Honorary Professor at the Fenner School of Environment & Society at the Australian National University (ANU), where he lectures and mentors postgraduate students focusing on kangaroo management and rangeland systems. With over 50 years of experience in wildlife, environmental, and agricultural management, he has held roles in government agencies, research institutions, and private enterprises. His research integrates kangaroo populations into pastoral systems, emphasizing sustainable use for biodiversity conservation and methane reduction.
Wilson holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen (1979) and an MVSc from the University of Sydney (1975). His career includes leadership roles at the Bureau of Rural Sciences, ACIL Economics, and the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation. He has authored over 180 publications, three books, and contributed to landmark conservation strategies like Australia’s National Conservation Strategy (1987).
His research interests span kangaroo ecology, Indigenous land management, carbon-neutral meat production, and wildlife disease management. Notable awards include the Member of the Order of Australia (2021) for contributions to conservation and veterinary science. Wilson’s work emphasizes market-based incentives for private land conservation and sustainable wildlife enterprises, particularly in Indigenous communities.
He has pioneered aerial survey techniques for wildlife population assessment and advised on kangaroo harvesting ethics. His recent work explores carbon farming opportunities in rangelands and kangaroo-based methane abatement strategies. Wilson also leads initiatives like the Kuka Kanyini project, promoting Indigenous wildlife stewardship in central Australia.
His publications address kangaroo population dynamics, wildlife policy, and sustainable land use. Grants and collaborations include projects with ANU, Indigenous Protected Areas, and the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation. Wilson’s legacy includes over 4,500 hours of commercial aerial survey experience, aiding biodiversity monitoring across Australia.
