George Stiny

George Stiny is a Professor at the Department of Architecture, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), specializing in design and computation. He joined MIT in 1996 after 15 years at the University of California, Los Angeles. His research focuses on shape grammars and algorithmic aesthetics, challenging conventional computer-aided design systems.

• Teaching experience at University of Sydney, Royal College of Art (London), and Open University

His work includes foundational contributions to the formalization of design processes and computational models in the arts. He is currently working on a book titled Shape (forthcoming from Cambridge University Press) and has authored key texts such as Pictorial and Formal Aspects of Shape and Shape Grammars and Algorithmic Aesthetics (with J. Gips).
