George Lopez serves as the Robert Beckwith Artist-in-Residence and Director of the Bowdoin Orchestra at Bowdoin College's Music department, where he holds the academic rank of Lecturer. With over 30 years of experience, he is recognized as a dynamic performer, sought-after pedagogue, and engaging lecturer in the international music community.
His performance expertise spans classical piano repertoire including complete cycles of Bach's Klavierubungen, Chopin's Etudes and Ballades, Mozart's sonatas, and Beethoven's concertos. He champions newly composed works and underrepresented composers from Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Middle East, particularly through his interdisciplinary "Music in the Museum" lecture-recital series that explores connections between music, visual art, and cultural history. His research interests emphasize cross-cultural musical dialogues and historical performance practices.
Notable honors include:
- First Prize for the Diplome Superieure at Ecole Normale de Musique, Paris
- Distinguished Uitvorend Musicus degree from Sweelinck Conservatorium, Amsterdam
As an educator, Lopez directs the Bowdoin College Symphony Orchestra and co-founded DUO MUNDI GEORGE & GULI with partner Gulimina Mahamuti to perform two-piano repertoire by immigrant composers. He regularly presents masterclasses at institutions including Manhattan School of Music, Berkeley, and Boston University, and collaborates with major orchestras such as New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony.
