Professor George Havenith is the Director of the Environmental Ergonomics Research Centre at Loughborough University, where he holds the Chair in Environmental Physiology and Ergonomics. His work integrates physiology, physics, and ergonomics to study human responses to environmental stressors like heat, cold, and altitude. Key research areas include thermal physiology, clothing design optimization, and the impact of climate change on human performance and occupational health. He advises major companies such as adidas and Decathlon on thermal physiology and clothing science.
Education: MSc (Mathematical Biology) and PhD (Medical Physiology) from Utrecht University and Radboud University, Nijmegen. Previous roles include Senior Lecturer, Reader, and Dean of the Design School at Loughborough. Over 250 peer-reviewed publications and 100+ consultancy reports, with research incorporated into ISO and EN standards.
Research focuses on body mapping (sweating patterns, skin temperature), heat/mass transfer through clothing, and climate change mitigation strategies. Projects like HEAT-SHIELD address occupational heat stress in industries. Awards include Fellowships from the American College of Sports Medicine and the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors.
- Key Achievements: Developed thermal stress models used in global standards, advised military and healthcare sectors, and supported sportswear innovations for Team GB.
- Labs/Teams: Environmental Ergonomics Research Centre (EERC), collaborations with international institutions and industries.
- Grants/Consultancy: Over £5M in research funding; expert witness in litigation cases and coroner’s inquiries.
