Georg Spitaler is a political scientist and historian affiliated with the University of Vienna, where he teaches as a private lecturer at the Institute of Political Science. He is also a researcher at the Association for the History of the Labor Movement (VGA). His work focuses on political theory, workers’ history, cultural studies, and the intersection of sports and politics. Spitaler’s current research project, Hilde Krones and the 'Generation of Completion', explores the political biography of socialist activist Hilde Krones and links her legacy to contemporary debates on political emotions and emancipatory futures. This project employs a method he terms an 'exploratory séance,' engaging archival materials to uncover buried hopes and 'lost futures' of 20th-century socialist movements.
His publications include works on Red Vienna, sports and gender, and Jewish identity in Austrian sports. Notable titles include Hilde Krones and the 'Generation of Completion' (2024), Sport and Feminism (2025, co-edited), and Red Vienna Sourcebook (2020). His research bridges historical analysis with contemporary political theory, particularly through queer feminist frameworks and examinations of political emotions.
Spitaler’s work has been showcased in exhibitions, such as the Wien Museum’s Red Vienna: Ideas, Debates, Practice (2019), and through public engagement via podcasts like the kulturItexte series. While no formal awards are listed, his contributions to political and cultural historiography are evident in his prolific output and interdisciplinary approach.
