Georg Fuchsbauer is an Associate Professor in the Security and Privacy group at TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology), Austria. He leads the WWTF project COnFIDE (Cryptographic Foundations of Privacy in Distributed Ledgers) and serves as Principal Investigator for the FWF-SFB project SPyCoDe (Semantic and Cryptographic Foundations of Security and Privacy by Compositional Design). Before joining TU Wien, he worked as a research scientist at Inria in the Crypto Team at École normale supérieure (2016-2019) and was a visiting scientist at the Simons Institute at UC Berkeley in autumn 2019.
His research focuses on cryptography, blockchain technology, security protocols, and privacy-preserving systems. Fuchsbauer has made significant contributions to digital signatures, zero-knowledge proofs, blockchain security, and cryptographic protocols. His work spans theoretical foundations and practical applications, with numerous publications in top-tier venues including CRYPTO, EUROCRYPT, and ASIACRYPT. He has supervised multiple PhD students who have gone on to academic careers, and his research has practical impact through projects like SpaceMint, a cryptocurrency based on proofs of space rather than computational work.
Fuchsbauer earned his PhD from Université Paris VII in 2011 under the supervision of David Pointcheval, with his thesis "Automorphic Signatures and Applications" receiving the Best PhD Thesis 2011 award from the ERCIM Security and Trust Management Working Group. Prior to his position at TU Wien, he completed postdoctoral work at Bristol University and IST Austria, establishing himself as a leading researcher in cryptographic protocols and their applications to real-world security problems.

Fuchsbauer has advised multiple PhD students including Fabian Regen, Marek Sefranek, Mathias Wolf, Antoine Plouviez, Balthazar Bauer, and Michele Orrù, all of whom have pursued academic careers after completing their degrees. His research has been supported by significant grants including the WWTF project COnFIDE and the FWF-SFB project SPyCoDe. He has also contributed to the development of SpaceMint, a cryptocurrency proposal that replaces computational proof-of-work with proof-of-space, addressing environmental concerns with traditional cryptocurrencies.
