Dr Geoffrey Maguire is a Fellow in Spanish at Gonville & Caius College, Bye-Fellow and Director of Studies at Emmanuel College, and Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Centre of Latin American Studies within the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics at the University of Cambridge. His academic work spans multiple institutions within the university, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to Latin American cultural studies.
Maguire specializes in contemporary Latin American film, literature and visual art with particular interests in cultural memory, queer representation, and sexuality and gender. His current research project, Un/Natural: Marine Sexualities and the Queer Ecological, draws contemporary queer theory into dialogue with the blue humanities and marine biology through various literary, cinematic and artistic texts. His teaching encompasses undergraduate papers for the Section of Spanish and Portuguese, as well as MPhil courses in Film Studies, Gender Studies and the Centre of Latin American Studies.
Maguire's scholarly output demonstrates a consistent focus on queer aesthetics, memory politics, and representations of childhood and adolescence in Latin American cinema. His work frequently examines how filmic narratives engage with historical trauma, particularly in Argentine cinema, while also exploring the intersections of gender, sexuality, and spatial representation. Recent publications show an increasing engagement with ecological themes through a queer theoretical lens, as evidenced by his 2024 monograph Bodies of Water.
- Hunt-Simes Visiting Chair in Sexuality Studies at the University of Sydney (2024)
Maguire actively supervises Year Abroad Projects, Optional Dissertations, MPhil essays and doctoral theses on Hispanic and Lusophone cinema, literature and visual art. Beyond his academic roles, he serves on the Steering Committee of Cambridge Reproduction and the Management Team of the lgbtQ+@Cam programme, which promotes research and network building related to queer, trans and sexuality studies across the University. He is also Project Co-Lead of the Queer Conceptions research network, Trustee of the Society for Latin American Studies (SLAS), and Trustee of the Cambridge Film Trust which runs the annual Cambridge Film Festival.
Maguire's scholarly activities are deeply embedded in both university-wide initiatives and international academic networks, reflecting his commitment to interdisciplinary research and community engagement in the fields of Latin American studies and queer theory.
