Geoffrey A. Preidis, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital. He holds positions in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition, and serves as Associate Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D./Ph.D.). Dr. Preidis is also faculty in the Development, Disease Models & Therapeutics Graduate Program, Immunology & Microbiology Graduate Program, and Clinical Scientist Training Graduate Program.
Dr. Preidis received his academic training from prestigious institutions:
- A.B. in Physics, cum laude, from Harvard University (2003)
- Ph.D. in Translational Biology and Molecular Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine (2011)
- M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine (2012)
- Internship in Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine & Texas Children's Hospital (2013)
- Residency in Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine & Texas Children's Hospital (2014)
- Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition at Baylor College of Medicine & Texas Children's Hospital (2018)
Dr. Preidis is a physician-scientist clinically trained in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. His research program focuses on defining mechanisms through which early life undernutrition alters metabolism and determining how undernutrition influences intestinal and liver function. His laboratory investigates how malnutrition alters hepatic secretion, transcriptional programming, gastrointestinal motility, and host-microbiome interactions to impact growth. His work is pertinent to those suffering from nutritional deficiencies caused by a wide range of medical and socioeconomic factors, including protein-energy undernutrition in the developing world and underweight newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Analysis of Dr. Preidis' recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a strong focus on the intersection of microbiome science, nutrition, and pediatric gastrointestinal health. His work spans multiple areas including bile acid metabolism, gut microbiome development in preterm infants, probiotic interventions, and mechanisms of gastrointestinal motility disorders. A significant portion of his research examines sex differences in nutritional physiology and the long-term consequences of early life undernutrition on metabolic programming.
Dr. Preidis has received substantial research funding from multiple prestigious sources:
- National Institutes of Health (multiple grants including R01, R03, K08)
- Global Probiotics Council
- Thrasher Research Fund
- North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Foundation/Nestle Nutrition Research
- Texas Medical Center Digestive Disease Center
- Alkek Center for Metagenomics and Microbiome Research
- American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society
- American Gastroenterological Association-Rome Foundation
- Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation
Dr. Preidis leads a research laboratory at Texas Children's Hospital, where he mentors students and trainees across multiple graduate programs. His laboratory work is highly collaborative, involving partnerships with experts in microbiome science, nutrition, and molecular biology. Current research directions include examining how malnutrition alters hepatic secretion, transcriptional programming, gastrointestinal motility, and host-microbiome interactions to impact growth.
