Geoffery Wheat is a Research Professor affiliated with the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. He holds adjunct roles at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) and serves as Affiliate Graduate Faculty at the University of Hawaii. His research focuses on geochemistry, hydrogeology, and undersea instrumentation, with emphasis on fluid dynamics in oceanic environments and subduction zones.
Current research projects include studies of mud volcanism in the Mariana Forearc, thermal states of ancient seafloor, and long-term monitoring of fluid chemistry in boreholes. He is also involved in developing submarine instrumentation and investigating hydrothermal systems in regions like the Eastern Lau Spreading Center.
Wheat's work integrates field observations with analytical techniques to understand fluid flow, geochemical processes, and the interplay between geological structures and fluid dynamics in marine environments. His contributions span experimental methodologies for deep-sea sampling and the hydrogeological architecture of oceanic crust.
