Geoff Watson is a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. He specializes in railway and geotechnical instrumentation, solid waste infrastructure modeling, and geomechanics of landfill waste. His research focuses on advanced sensors (MEMS, geophones, fiber optics) for railway and geotechnical applications, as well as infrastructure resilience under environmental and operational stresses. Watson leads multiple EPSRC-funded projects, including rail track durability, landfill waste behavior, and infrastructure systems analytics. He collaborates with industry partners like Network Rail and HS2, and contributes to national infrastructure risk assessments such as CCRA2. He supervises PhD students and teaches geotechnical laboratory modules for undergraduates.
Key research projects include:
- EP/M025276/1 - Long-life railway track systems
- EP/H044949 - 21st Century railway track design
- EP/K02521X/1 - Deep basement structure pressures
- EP/E00654X/1 - Landfill settlement mechanics
- MISTRAL: Multi-scale infrastructure analytics
His recent work emphasizes fiber-reinforced ballast trials, thermal effects on integral bridges, and acoustic sensor deployments for trackbed analysis.
