Geoff Mann is a SFU Distinguished Professor in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Environment. He holds affiliate roles as Associate Member of the SFU School of Public Policy and Senior Fellow at the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET) in New York City. His research bridges political economy, political theory, and the history of ideas, focusing on uncertainty in modern societies—spanning climate change, economic crises, and far-right politics. He critiques capitalist structures and explores responses to existential crises through probabilistic models, ideological frameworks, and socio-political dynamics.
His scholarly contributions include five authored books and edited volumes, with articles in venues like the London Review of Books and New York Review of Books. Awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship (2022–2023) and membership at the Institute for Advanced Study (2023–2024). His work has examined topics from Keynesian economics to global logistics, emphasizing political scenarios for climate disaster and the adaptation of governance systems.
Geoff Mann has mentored numerous PhD and MA students, including notable advisees such as Diandra Ships (PhD 2023) and Mark Kear (PhD 2015, now Assistant Professor at University of Arizona). His research often intersects with policy debates, public engagement, and interdisciplinary collaborations, reflecting his commitment to addressing pressing socio-ecological challenges.
