Gennady Shvets is Professor of Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. His pioneering research spans plasma physics, nanophotonics, and optical metamaterials, with applications in biosensing and advanced accelerator science. He directs the Laboratory of Plasma Studies and has authored over 180 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Science and Nature.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT (1995), B.S. in Chemical Physics from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1989), and postdoctoral training at Princeton University (1996).
Research focuses on:
- Plasmonic metamaterials for infrared sensing and imaging
- Laser-plasma interactions for particle acceleration
- Graphene-based devices and photonic topological insulators
- Biosensing applications for cellular phenotyping and cancer detection
Publications show strong emphasis on nanophotonics, metamaterials innovations, and plasma physics applications, with recent work advancing biomedical imaging techniques and topological photonics.
Awards and honors:
- Fellow, Optical Society of America (2009)
- Fellow, American Physical Society (2008)
- Presidential Early Career Award (2000)
Leads research teams in plasma studies and metamaterials design, collaborating with national laboratories. Current work explores proton therapy applications and fusion energy research.
