Gene VanWyk is an Instructor of Art at James Madison University's School of Art, Design and Art History, joining in 2024. Born in Harrisonburg, VA, they hold a BA in Studio Art and Philosophy from Gustavus Adolphus College and an MFA in Fine Arts from California College of the Arts. Their interdisciplinary practice merges philosophy with critiques of rural and industrial America, exploring ethical living, sustainability, and disability experiences through small-scale architectural replicas and mixed-media installations.
Research interests focus on overlooked utilitarian structures—such as doorways, billboards, and utility poles—recontextualized to provoke reflection on societal engagement and communication. Their work addresses post-urbanism, material reuse, and the power dynamics between viewer and object.
Recent artworks like Mt.CrawfordII (2024) and Utility Pole (2024) exemplify their exploration of found materials and socio-spatial narratives. VanWyk’s practice is deeply influenced by their experience with disability, emphasizing the struggle for meaningful communication and interaction in public spaces.
