Gena Nichols serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Biology and Biomedical Sciences at Regis College, Regis University, where she leads critical research on global viral pathogens.
Her laboratory specializes in Dengue virus pathogenesis, investigating how viral proteins hijack cellular signaling and trafficking pathways to enable replication and disease progression. With 50-100 million annual infections affecting 40% of the world's population and no approved treatments available, her work identifies key viral and host factors in virus assembly, maturation, and release using mutant viral constructs and targeted human protein knockdowns. This research provides foundational insights for developing urgently needed antiviral therapeutics and improved vaccine candidates against this high-mortality disease.
Dr. Nichols directs an active research program addressing one of the world's most pressing arboviral threats, focusing on molecular mechanisms that could unlock new intervention strategies where current medical solutions remain critically limited.
