Gemma Carney

Dr. Gemma Carney is a Lecturer in Social Policy and Ageing at Queen's University Belfast's School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work. She leads Queen's on Ageing, a cross-faculty initiative, and is part of the Centre for Inclusion, Transformation and Equality (CITE). Her research focuses on cultural gerontology, politics of ageing, and social policy, with a global perspective on ageing societies. Notable work includes Critical Questions for Ageing Societies (2020), nominated for the Richard Kalish Award, and studies on dementia narratives and intergenerational solidarity. She has supervised multiple PhD students and contributes to teaching modules on ageing and social policy. Awards include the 2019 Queen's University Teaching Award for inclusive pedagogy. Current projects explore media's role in ageism during the pandemic and policy responses to ageing populations.
