Gemma Bowsher is a Senior Research Associate Lead at the Centre for Conflict & Health Research and a Research Fellow at King’s College London. She holds academic affiliations with multiple departments, including the Department of War Studies, Centre for Science & Security Studies, and the Institute of Cancer Policy. Her work bridges global health security, conflict studies, and biosecurity, with a focus on preparedness for biological/chemical emergencies and health systems in conflict zones.
Education includes a medical degree from King’s College London and a Master’s in Medical Anthropology from Harvard University. She also teaches global health and security courses across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including the MA in Conflict, Security & Development and Science & International Security.
Research interests include health security intelligence, biosecurity governance, and the intersection of armed conflict with public health. She collaborates with governments and international bodies to implement programs in Ukraine, MENA, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. Clinical practice as a radiology resident in the UK’s NHS complements her academic work.
Recognitions include Royal Society of Public Health and Royal Geographical Society fellowships. She holds visiting appointments at Jesus College, Cambridge and the American University of Iraq. Recent projects include research on zoonotic disease surveillance and health security intelligence systems.
