Gelina Harlaftis

Gelina Harlaftis is Professor of Maritime History at the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Crete, and Director of the Institute for Mediterranean Studies (FORTH) since 2017. She holds a D.Phil. from Oxford and M.Phil. from Cambridge, with earlier roles at the University of Piraeus (1990-1996), Ionian University (2003-2019), and visiting appointments at Oxford, Harvard, and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

• Research Focus: Maritime history, economic/social history, business history, global history, and diaspora history.
• Projects: Leads the "Onassis Business History" project (2017-2021) with the Onassis Foundation.
• Awards: Recipient of the Efkrantis Prize (2020), Runciman Award (1997), and visiting scholar/fellow positions at Harvard, Oxford, and Greenwich.
• Publications: Authored 27 books and over 60 articles, including Creating Global Shipping (2019) on Greek shipping entrepreneurs.
• Leadership: Former Chair of Ionian University's Department of History (2004-2008) and President of the International Maritime Economic History Association (2004-2008).
