Prof. Geert van den Bogaart is a Professor in Molecular Immunology at the University of Groningen, affiliated with both the Faculty of Science and Engineering and Faculty of Medical Sciences. His research focuses on antigen presentation mechanisms, macrophage biology, and dendritic cell function, with a particular emphasis on lipid metabolism and cellular signaling pathways. He leads the Molecular Immunology group within the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology institute.
Key areas of research include the role of short-chain fatty acids in macrophage polarization, the dynamics of cytoskeletal proteins in immune cell migration, and the application of quantum sensing technologies to study reactive oxygen species. He has secured significant grants including two ERC Proof of Concept Grants (2025, 2023), an ERC Consolidator Grant (2019), and an HFSP Young Investigator Grant (2018).
His lab investigates fundamental immunological processes using advanced microscopy and biochemical approaches, with translational applications in inflammation, cancer, and infectious diseases. Recent work includes studies on catestatin's cardioprotective effects and the development of novel immunotherapy approaches for food allergies.
