Geert E. Smid is a Professor of Psychotrauma, Loss, and Grief at the University of Humanistic Studies in the Netherlands and holds a concurrent position as Professor at the ARQ National Psychotrauma Centre/ARQ Centrum'45. He is also an active psychiatrist and former Associate Director of Residency Training at the latter institution. His research focuses on PTSD, traumatic grief, and stress sensitization, with emphasis on meaning attribution, cultural aspects, and epidemiological trends in mental health disorders.
Smid's academic career includes roles as Senior Researcher (2011–2019) and current Professorial position since 2019. His work integrates clinical practice with academic research, particularly addressing bereavement following disasters, violence, and drug-related deaths. He leads projects such as a 2022–2024 study on moral injury in veterans, combining existential and narrative interventions.
His research interests span PTSD diagnosis/treatment, cultural variations in grief, and service-delivery approaches.
