Gee Semmalar is a Visiting Fellow in the Department of History at the European University Institute (EUI), working within the Max Weber Programme for Postdoctoral Studies. He completed his doctorate in Law at the University of Kent, UK in 2023.
His primary research areas include:
- Critical caste studies
- Legal histories
- Queer epistemologies
- Critical colonial studies
- Gender and sexuality in South Asia
Currently collaborating with Prof Benno Gammerl and Prof Pieter Judson, Gee is developing a monograph based on his doctoral dissertation that examines the legal and administrative production of gender deviance as caste categories in nineteenth-century British India.
His notable achievements include:
- Vice Chancellor's Research Scholarship (2019-2022) at the University of Kent
- The Modern Law Review's Simon Roberts Award (2022)
- Socio-Legal Studies Association fieldwork grant (2019)
Gee has taught undergraduate Law courses at the University of Kent including 'A Critical Introduction to Law' and 'Criminal Law'. He frequently delivers guest lectures across Indian universities on transgender legal history, critical colonial studies, and queer epistemologies of the Global South. His academic and journalistic publications on caste, gender and resistance in South Asia have been incorporated into undergraduate syllabi in universities across India and the United States.
