Gediminas Vitkus is a Professor at the Department of International Relations, Center of European Studies, Institute of International Relations and Political Science (IIRPS), Vilnius University (VU). He has been affiliated with IIRPS since 1992, serving as Deputy Director for Academic Work (1993–1995) and Director of the European Integration Studies Center (1995–1998). He was Head of the Political Science Department at the Military Academy of Lithuania (2001–2013) and has edited the Lithuanian Annual Strategic Review since 2003. He is a member of the Lithuanian Political Science Association (President, 2000–2001) and the Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (since 2016).
His research focuses on European integration, Baltic security and defense policies, EU-Russia relations, and international recognition frameworks. Key themes include small-state diplomacy, Euroscepticism, and normative power dynamics in EU foreign policy. His work bridges theoretical analysis with regional security challenges, emphasizing Lithuania's role in the Baltic context.
Vitkus's publications reflect a consistent focus on EU governance, Baltic-Russian relations, and historical foreign policy dilemmas. Recent trends highlight critical examinations of recognition politics, hybrid threats, and the evolution of Lithuania's strategic posture within the EU and NATO frameworks. His scholarship combines empirical case studies with methodological rigor in international relations theory.
