Dr. Gayathri Balasuriya is a Research Fellow in the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences at RMIT University. Her research focuses on neuroimmunological mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism, leveraging animal models to investigate gut-brain axis interactions. She explores roles of intestinal macrophages, enteric nervous system dysfunction, and therapeutic interventions like hydrogel-based treatments for neonatal stroke. Dr. Balasuriya is actively supervising PhD/Masters projects on topics like prebiotic interventions for gut health and neuroprotection in perinatal brain injury. Her work bridges neuroscience, immunology, and biomedical engineering, with a focus on translational research. She can be contacted via email and has an ORCID profile (0000-0003-3411-4543).
Research Themes: Neurosciences, Neuroimmunology, Gastroenterology, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Biomedical Engineering.
Key Projects: Investigating caecal dysfunction in autism mouse models, developing hydrogel therapies for neonatal stroke, analyzing macrophage-neuron crosstalk in colonic motility regulation.
