Prof. Gavin Walker holds the Bernal Chair in Process Engineering at the University of Limerick (UL) and is a Visiting Research Professor at Queen's University Belfast. He leads the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC) as PI and contributes to multiple research initiatives including SSPC (Science Foundation Ireland's Research Centre in Pharmaceuticals). His work focuses on advanced manufacturing processes, particularly in pharmaceuticals and materials science.
Prof. Walker has secured €37 million in research funding across 35 projects, with a focus on process engineering modeling, continuous manufacturing, and crystallization. He is an editorial board member for 5 journals, including Chemical Engineering Journal, and has authored 235+ journal articles (h-index 60, 14,800+ citations). His research team includes postdocs and students addressing manufacturing challenges in materials and pharmaceuticals.
His expertise aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing sustainable manufacturing practices. Awards include the Royal Academy of Engineering ExxonMobil Fellow (2001) and Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellow (2009). He teaches modules in bioprocess engineering and chemical engineering design at UL.
Prof. Walker co-founded spin-out companies ADFerTech (Queen’s University Belfast) and Innovative Particle Processing (iP2, UL), commercializing technologies like advanced drying and particle processing. His current projects involve continuous manufacturing of metal-organic frameworks and optimizing drug delivery systems.
