Gavin Smith is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Australian National University (ANU), School of Sociology. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Aberdeen, alongside an MA in Sociology and an MRes in Social Research Methods. His research focuses on surveillance studies, facial recognition technology, and snake ecology. He is Director of the Surveillance Studies Network and editor of *Surveillance & Society*. Current projects include the ARC-funded study on public responses to facial recognition and a snake ecology project tracking Eastern brown snakes in Canberra.
**Education**: PhD (Sociology), M.A. (Sociology), M.Res. (Social Research Methods) from the University of Aberdeen.
**Research Interests**: Surveillance impacts, biometric ethics, multispecies relations, smart cities, and crime prevention. Collaborations include the Surveillance and Everyday Life Research Group and the New Transparency Project funded by Canada’s SSHRC.
**Grants/Projects**: Leading the ARC Discovery Project (2020-2024) on facial recognition and co-investigator on studies like *Automated Vision: Smart Cameras and Public Space*. Active in interdisciplinary groups like the Centre for Law, Justice and Journalism.
**Labs/Teams**: Co-founded the Surveillance and Everyday Life Research Group; affiliated with institutions in Canada, Japan, and the UK, including the Surveillance Studies Centre and Meiji University’s Centre for Business Information Ethics.
