Gavin Kelly

Prof. Dr. Gavin Kelly holds a personal Chair in Latin Literature and Roman History at the University of Edinburgh, where he has served since 2005. As a Senior Fellow at Bamberg's AntCoCo project (2023-2024), he contributes expertise to late antique scholarship. His career spans research fellowships at Peterhouse, Cambridge (2000-2004), University of Manchester (2004-2005), and leadership roles including Head of Edinburgh's Classics Department (2016-2019).

Kelly specializes in Roman imperial literature and late antique historiography, with a focus on the 4th-6th centuries CE. His research bridges philological analysis and historical inquiry, examining texts like Ammianus Marcellinus' Res Gestae and Sidonius Apollinaris' correspondence.

His recent publications center on late Roman textual traditions, including critical editions of Ammianus and Sidonius. Key themes include manuscript studies, prose rhythm, and the reception of classical texts through medieval and Renaissance scholarship.
