Gavin Hunter

Dr. Gavin Hunter is a molecular plant pathologist and mycologist currently serving as a Team Leader and Research Scientist at CSIRO. His work focuses on molecular diagnostics of plant pathogens, classical weed biocontrol, and the identification of invasive fungal pathogens through DNA-based tools and morphological taxonomy. He has contributed to biosecurity initiatives for Australian plant industries and ecosystems.

• MSc in Microbiology (University of Pretoria, 2002)
• BSc (Hons) and BSc (University of Pretoria, 2000 and 1999)

His research spans academia, government, and commercial biotechnology sectors. Key areas include fungal evolution, population biology, and developing innovative diagnostic platforms for plant pathogens.

Gavin leads the Plant Health Diagnostics Team at CSIRO, previously working with the Temperate Weeds Team to deploy fungal pathogens for invasive weed control.
