Gautam Ghosh

Gautam Ghosh is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania and an Andrew W. Mellon Penn Faculty Fellow in the Humanities (2003–2004). His research focuses on intersections between migration, nationalism, and religious belief through the lens of liberal political theory.

• Current work: Analysis of Hindu diaspora identity formation in the U.S., particularly second/third-generation Indian immigrants' increasing self-identification as Hindu
• Key methodology: Ethnographic engagement with liberal political theory

His project on the 1947 Partition of British India examines cultural expression during nation-building processes. As a Forum Fellow, he investigates how Hindu chauvinism and internet-mediated discourse reshape contemporary understandings of 'nation' and 'civilization.'
