Gaurav Desai is a Professor and Chair of the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan. He holds affiliations with the African Studies Center, Center for South Asian Studies, and is a life member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. His research focuses on postcolonial studies, global literary connections, and colonial cultural history. He earned his PhD from Duke University (1996).

Research interests include postcolonial theory, Indian Ocean transnationalism, law and literature, and African literary studies. His work bridges African and South Asian literatures through a comparative lens, emphasizing colonial and postcolonial intersections. Notable works include Commerce with the Universe (2013), which examines Indian Ocean narratives, and Subject to Colonialism (2001), a foundational text in African colonial studies.
Publications span edited volumes like Postcolonialisms (2005) and Critical Terms for the Study of Africa (2018), alongside articles in journals such as PMLA and South Atlantic Quarterly. His writing explores themes of cultural critique, migration, and decolonial thought.
Awards include the 2014 Rene Wellek Prize and fellowships from the National Humanities Center and Rockefeller Foundation. He has held visiting roles at Cambridge University and the Bellagio Center.
