Gary Umphrey is an Associate Professor of Statistics at the University of Guelph. He holds a PhD in Biology and specializes in statistical applications to biodiversity conservation, evolutionary biology, and ecological systems. His research focuses on biostatistical methodologies including experimental design (bias in aliased/fractional designs) and spatial point processes for species distribution modeling. He has advised graduate students on topics such as hydroacoustic telemetry accuracy and ecological diagnostic methods for Maxent models.
- Education: PhD in Biology
His research interests span biodiversity statistics, myrmecology, and the development of diagnostic frameworks for ecological models. He is recognized for his teaching excellence, having received multiple awards for instructional innovation and student mentorship.
Recent student projects include Jeffrey Daniel's 2014 MSc on hydroacoustic telemetry positional accuracy, and Jessica Connolly's 2012 work in related statistical methodologies.
