Gary Tubb is the Anupama and Guru Ramakrishnan Professor in the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. He specializes in Sanskrit literature, poetics, and the intersection of philosophy, religion, and literature in Sanskrit culture, with a particular focus on the Mahabharata epic.
- Education: Ph.D. in Sanskrit and Indian Studies from Harvard University (1979).
His research explores Sanskrit grammatical and commentarial traditions, the evolution of Sanskrit poetics, and the philosophical undercurrents within classical Indian texts. He is actively engaged in translating and editing key Sanskrit works, including the Mahabharata and the Bhojaprabandha.
Tubb's publications reflect a commitment to advancing Sanskrit education and interdisciplinary scholarship. His 2007 co-authored handbook provides foundational tools for Sanskrit language instruction, while his ongoing works in progress emphasize historical narratives and epic analysis.
