Gary Marquis is currently the Dean of the School of Engineering at Aalto University, holding a Professorship in Energy and Mechanical Engineering. He also serves as a Senior Advisor in the Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering. His academic career includes affiliate professor roles at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and visiting professorships at Kyushu University and EPFL.
Marquis' research focuses on mechanics of materials with emphasis on fatigue behavior of welded structures, multiaxial loading effects, and lightweight steel structure development. He has held significant leadership roles in the International Institute of Welding (IIW), including Chairman of Commission XIII, TMB Chairman, and IIW President (2014–2017). He has organized international conferences and contributed to over 120 research outputs.
His educational background includes a Doctoral degree in Engineering from Helsinki University of Technology (1995) and a Master's from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1984). He has been recognized with awards like the 2023 Water Edstrom Medal and an Honorary Doctorate from Aalto University (2022).
