Gary M. Segura is a Professor of Public Policy, Political Science, and Chicano and Chicana Studies at the Luskin School of Public Affairs, UCLA. He served as Dean of the Luskin School from 2017 to 2022. His research focuses on Latino politics, political behavior, and inequality in American democracy. Segura holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
His expertise includes political representation, wartime public opinion, and social cleavages. He has authored influential books such as Latino America (2014) and Calculated War (2024), and directed major surveys like the Latino National Survey and the American National Election Studies. He provided expert testimony in landmark LGBTQ+ rights cases, including Obergefell v. Hodges.
Segura’s awards include a 2010 election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Fellowship. His work bridges academia and public policy, influencing debates on voting rights, minority representation, and civil rights. He has advised governmental and media entities, and his polling research has interviewed over 100,000 Americans on political issues.
