Dr. Gary Kuchar is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Victoria, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities. His academic focus spans Renaissance Literature, 17th-century poetry and prose, intellectual history, Reformation culture, Shakespeare, literary theory, and the philosophy of religion. He holds MA and PhD degrees from McMaster University and has been honored with the 2003 Distinguished Dissertation Award and the 2022 Montaigne Prize. Currently on leave, he teaches courses such as ENSH 355: John Milton: Major Poetry and Selected Prose, emphasizing interdisciplinary engagement with early modern texts.
His research explores intersections between theology, literature, and cultural history, with notable contributions to studies of George Herbert, Robert Southwell, and John Milton. Kuchar has authored four monographs and contributed to major volumes like the Oxford History of Poetry in English and the Cambridge Companion to Shakespeare and Religion. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary theoretical frameworks, addressing posthumanism, ecocriticism, and historical phenomenology.
Awards include recognition for scholarly rigor (Distinguished Dissertation Award) and contributions to Renaissance studies (Montaigne Prize).
