Gary Evans is the Elizabeth Lee Vincent Professor in the Department of Psychology at Cornell University's College of Human Ecology. His research examines how physical environments impact child development, with particular focus on childhood poverty, environmental stressors, and the formation of environmental attitudes.
His work investigates how substandard housing, neighborhood conditions, and cumulative environmental risks affect children's cognitive development, mental health, and physiological stress responses. Recent research explores the protective effects of greenspace exposure and educational interventions for disadvantaged children.
Evans' publications demonstrate growing interest in climate change impacts on youth mental health and the developmental origins of pro-environmental behaviors. His longitudinal studies reveal how childhood poverty becomes biologically embedded through chronic stress pathways.
Current projects examine neural mechanisms linking environmental adversity to language processing difficulties and investigate how school environments can buffer pollution-related neurocognitive impacts on learning.
