Gary Edward Schnittjer is a Distinguished Professor of Old Testament in the School of Divinity at Cairn University, where he has taught since 1997. He specializes in biblical Hebrew, Old Testament exegesis, and the Bible’s use of earlier Scripture. His research focuses on ethical challenges in the Old Testament, particularly passages often deemed 'embarrassing' by modern readers. He holds a PhD from Dallas Theological Seminary and has conducted post-graduate studies in biblical Hebrew at the University of Pennsylvania and biblical Aramaic at Westminster Theological Seminary.
Professor Schnittjer has authored or co-authored multiple textbooks, including Torah Story (2nd ed.), Old Testament Use of Old Testament (forthcoming), and How to Study the Bible’s Use of the Bible. His work emphasizes contextual interpretation of problematic Old Testament passages to reveal divine grace and care for vulnerable groups. He is currently under contract with Baker Academic, B&H Academic, and Zondervan Academic for upcoming projects.
His recent scholarship includes addressing modern critiques of the Bible’s 'immoral' teachings, arguing that ancient laws often protected marginalized populations. His writings and podcasts engage with contemporary theological debates, bridging academic rigor with accessible public discourse.
