Prof. Gary Douglas Couples is a Professor at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society and the Institute for GeoEnergy Engineering. He holds dual professorships within these units. His academic journey includes a BSc and PhD from Texas A&M University, and an MSc from Rice University. Prior to academia, he worked in the oil industry and ran a consultancy before joining Glasgow University, later moving to Heriot-Watt in 1998.
His research focuses on geomechanical processes, pore-scale and grain-scale studies, fractured reservoirs, and seal behavior. Key areas include numerical simulation of geomechanical processes, fluid-flow coupling, and rock mechanics testing apparatus design. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to energy and environmental sustainability.
Recent publications emphasize interactions between fluid dynamics and rock mechanics, fracture mechanics, and advanced detection technologies. He has supervised one documented research project and maintains active collaborations in geomechanics and reservoir engineering. His contributions span experimental, theoretical, and applied research, addressing practical challenges in geo-energy and environmental engineering.
