Gary Deimling is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Case Western Reserve University. His research examines psychosocial impacts of life-threatening illness on older adults, particularly cancer survivors. Funded by the National Cancer Institute, his work investigates coping resources, health beliefs, stress effects, and quality of life among long-term survivors.
Deimling's parallel research stream analyzes family caregiving strains, especially for Alzheimer's patients, developing multidimensional measures of caregiver burden. His teaching portfolio includes Sociology of Aging, Medical Sociology, Family Processes, and Research Methods.
He mentors graduate students in social gerontology and medical sociology, serving on doctoral committees across health-related disciplines. Deimling previously chaired the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Committee.
