Gary Bente serves as Professor in the Department of Communication at Michigan State University's School of Communication Arts and Sciences and directs the Center for Avatar Research and Immersive Social Media Applications (CARISMA).
He received his Ph.D. from the University of Trier, Germany, in 1985.
Professor Bente's research spans Nonverbal Communication, Media Effects, and Virtual Reality with specialized focus on Cultural Differences. His methodological expertise includes Psychophysiology, Eye Tracking, and Continuous Response Measurement for analyzing human responses in digital environments. His work examines social-communicative processes through extended reality (XR) technologies.
As CARISMA director, he leads pioneering research in virtual reality systems that positions Michigan State University at the forefront of immersive social media applications, particularly in studying cross-cultural interactions within avatar-based environments.
