Gary Alan Wegner

Gary Alan Wegner is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College, where he has been a faculty member since 1982. His career spans roles at institutions like Mount Stromlo Observatory, Oxford University, and the University of Washington.

• Education: B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Arizona (1967), Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Washington (1971).

Wegner’s research focuses on observational astronomy, particularly large-scale peculiar motions, colliding galaxy clusters, gravitation and cosmology, and dynamics of elliptical galaxies. His work includes studies on the NOAO Fundamental Plane Survey and the Oxford-Dartmouth Thirty Degree Survey, addressing stellar populations, galaxy bias, and cosmological structures.

Wegner has received the Alexander von Humboldt research prize and contributed to key publications in The Astrophysical Journal and Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. He served as director of the MDM Observatory from 1991 to 1999.
