Professor Gareth Williams is a marine ecologist specializing in coral reef ecology and climate change impacts, affiliated with Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences. He holds a BSc in Marine Biology from Liverpool, an MSc in Marine Environmental Protection from Bangor, and a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington. His research focuses on macroecological approaches to understanding coral reef resilience, human and climatic drivers of reef structure, and spatial ecology. He supervises multiple PhD students and leads projects on oceanographic drivers and coral energy strategies. His work emphasizes protecting coral reefs under global warming, integrating land-sea interactions, and quantifying benthic community dynamics.
- Education:
- BSc Marine Biology, University of Liverpool (2004)
- MSc Marine Environmental Protection, Bangor University (2006)
- PhD Coral Disease Ecology, Victoria University of Wellington (2011)
- Research Interests: Coral reef resilience, climate change impacts, marine spatial ecology, disease dynamics, and oceanographic processes.
- Advising: Supervises 4 current PhD students and co-supervises 3 others, with notable past advisees contributing to coral reef recovery and nutrient dynamics studies.
- Projects: Includes investigations into coral energy strategies, oceanographic upwelling effects, and cold pulse impacts on reefs.
- Grants: Secured funding for projects like 'How do coral energy strategies influence their survival?' and 'Biophysical links between oceanographic processes and coral reef benthic communities.'
His publications emphasize coral reef vulnerability to climate stressors and human activities, with recent work highlighting spatial gradients and disease drivers. He advocates for conservation strategies that address both local and global threats to marine ecosystems.
