Dr. Gareth Walker is a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics at the University of Sheffield's School of English. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of York (2004) and has been with the School since 2006. His research focuses on the phonetic and interactional aspects of everyday conversation, including turn-taking, laughter, child language development, and communication disorders. He combines Conversation Analysis (CA) with auditory and acoustic phonetics to explore how linguistic resources shape social interaction.
Walker teaches courses such as ELL12 Sounds of English, ELL207 Phonetics, and EGH304 Conversation Analysis, contributing to both undergraduate and graduate programs. His current research includes analyzing speech patterns in individuals with dementia and mild cognitive impairment using intelligent virtual agents. He has supervised PhD students in areas such as turn-taking, phonetic variation, and clinical linguistics.
His publications span topics like simultaneous talk, phonetic detail in interaction, and clinical applications of linguistic analysis. He actively develops tools for phonetic research, including Praat scripts and LaTeX packages for transcription. Walker has presented widely at conferences and maintains an academic website and GitHub repository for sharing resources.
